Rameswaram: On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the Pamban sea bridge, establishing a vital rail connection between Rameswaram Island and the mainland. He also launched the new train service from Rameswaram to Tambaram (Chennai).
During the event, the Prime Minister signaled the departure of a Coast Guard vessel that navigated beneath the newly inaugurated bridge.
This bridge is expected to significantly enhance access to this revered pilgrimage site, attracting devotees from all over India. Constructed at a cost exceeding Rs 550 crore, it stands as India's inaugural vertical sea-lift bridge.
Stretching 2.08 kilometers, the structure consists of 99 spans, including a 72.5-meter vertical lift span that can elevate up to 17 meters, facilitating the passage of large vessels while maintaining uninterrupted train services.
The bridge is reinforced with stainless steel, coated with high-quality paint, and features fully welded joints, which contribute to its durability and lower maintenance needs.
Its foundation is anchored by 333 piles and 101 piers/pile caps, designed to accommodate dual rail tracks and potential future expansions. The application of polysiloxane paint offers protection against corrosion, ensuring its longevity in a challenging marine environment. This bridge exemplifies a harmonious blend of tradition and modern engineering.
Present at the inauguration were Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi, and State Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, among others.
Upon his return from Sri Lanka, Modi received a warm reception from Ravi, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu, Union Minister of State L Murugan, BJP Tamil Nadu unit chief K Annamalai, and senior BJP figures, including H Raja and Vanathi Srinivasan.
